Definitions:
Indeterminate: The tomato plant grows indefinitely with blossoms and fruit developing progressively throughout the season. Harvests last several months. Best grown with support.
Determinate: the tomato plant grows in a compact bush form and has a determined height that it grows to. Blossoms and fruits develop on the vine at the same time. Best grown with cages.
Hybrid: Tomato plants that are born from seeds that been created by two parent plants to breed desired effects such as better flavor, disease resistance and hybrid vigor. Seeds from the fruit of hybrid plants do not produce the same type plant, they revert back to one of the parent plant's genes.
Heirloom: The definition of Heirloom tomatoes is highly debatable as to how old the tomato variety should be to win this title. Some feel they should be 100 or 50 years old. Others think it should be those known to be in cultivation before 1945, when commercial hybridization became popular. The only agreed upon definition is that they are open pollinated.
Open-pollinated: Open pollination is pollination by insects, birds, wind, or other natural mechanisms. The seeds of open-pollinated plants will produce new generations of those plants; however, because breeding is uncontrolled and the pollen (male parent) source is unknown, open pollination results in plants that vary widely in genetic traits. Popular examples of plants produced by open pollination include the heirloom tomato.
